The Era of AI Agents: From Chatbots to Autonomous Executors

OpenAI has changed the tech world with the launch of dots, their always-on AI agents powered by the new GPT-6 Astra model. Instead of waiting for your next prompt, a dot uses its own cloud computer to run in the background and manage ongoing tasks across your apps. It only stops to ask for your approval on important decisions. This preview release marks a clear shift: we are moving beyond chatbots and into the era of autonomous executors.

When ChatGPT first came out, it amazed everyone. But in hindsight, those early versions were really just advanced text tools. Even as AI started helping developers write code, like with GitHub Copilot, it still relied on short, simple prompts. The AI acted like a junior assistant who needed regular guidance and help to finish tasks.

Now things have changed. You can give an agent one command, and it will handle the task on its own.

Here are some of the latest big announcements in the industry:

The Autonomous Shift & The Safety Dilemma

The main feature of these new agents is that they work for longer periods, while people need to step in much less often. We are shifting from a co-pilot model to an autopilot model.

However, this shift isn't without concerns. More tech experts and researchers are warning about security risks. As AI needs less human input to carry out complex tasks, such as making purchases, sending emails, or changing code, the risks increase. Making sure these agents have the right guardrails, like dots needing clear user approval for sensitive actions, will be a major challenge for the tech industry, and it's going to change how we work forever. But the question remains: how much control are we willing to hand over?
